Miracle of down syndrome
The goal of the Miracle World Foundation of Down Syndrome is to assist and educate families around the world in need of help awareness about Down Syndrome.
My name is Nina Urquhart and I am the founder of MWFDS. I faced many dificulties since the birth of my daughter, Rita, who is now eight years old. She attends school and tires to lead a normal life as other children her age. It takes courage and patience to raise a child with Down Syndrome especially in my situation. My husband left our family because of his inability to face life and responsibility. With the help of great friends I managed to provide for my daughter's medical needs. Recently, I had a chance to visit my family in North Africa and I was curious to understand how they treat children with DS. What I found was unbelievable! I couldn't belive that some families were hiding their children with DS. in some tribes it is beleived to be shameful to have a child with DS.
Many children with DS die due to neglect or the parents do not have the money to care for their children. I was deeply touched with the stories I heard and the children I met. Since returning home, I have trouble sleeping and enjoying life without thinking of those children and their families and thinking about how I can make a difference.
In 2001, I recieved approval to form the Miracle World Foundation of Down Syndrome. This is my dream come true!
